DEREK JETER
In ’96, Derek Jeter of the New York Yankees made a memorable contribution to the legacy of baseball’s winningest franchise. This 23-year-old shortstop helped lead the Yankees to a come-from-behind World Series championship over the favored Atlanta Braves. He was a unanimous choice for the AL Rookie of the Year, hitting .314 with 10 homers and 78 RBIs. Jeter played the most games of any AL rookie and had the most RBIs by a rookie shortstop since 1980.
Among the many highlights, Jeter enjoyed in ’96 were an inside-the-park homer oat Kansas City, and a 17-game hitting streak, the longest by a Yankee’s rookie since Joe Dimaggio’s hit 18 in a row in 1936. Jeter’s dream season included 49 multi-hit games (two 4-hit games, fifteen 3-hit games) and a lofty .345 average from the lead-off spot, where he went 55-159 in 38 games.
After a fabulous ’94 campaign, in which he was named Minor League Player of the Year by The Sporting News, Jeter first showed he belonged in the big leagues when he played in a handful of games with the Yankees in ’95. His breakthrough season the following year left no doubt about the fabulous future in store for Derek Jeter.
