From the box:
Babe Ruth
George Herman “Babe” Ruth arrived in Boston at the age of 19 to play for the Red Sox. The year was 1914, and the young pitcher was about to begin a colorful career that can be called nothing less than legendary.
The year after Ruth arrived, the Red Sox won the pennant in a race that saw the Babe strike out three consecutive players (including the great Ty Cobb) with the bases loaded. After capturing the pennant, Ruth and the Sox went on to win the 1915 World Series, just as they would do in 1916 and 1918 when Ruth pitched 29 consecutive scoreless innings (a record that stood until “Whitey” Ford broke it in 1962). But in 1920. tje “Sultan of Swat” was sold to the New York Yankees. Some disgruntled fans in Boston, whose Red Sox haven’t won a World Series since Ruth’s departure, jokingly blame their World Series shortcomings on “The Curse of the Bambino.”In 1936, Babe Ruth became one of the first five players inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. His remarkable baseball records include the most runs scored in a single season (177), the most total bases in a season (457), and a career home run record of 714, which lasted until Hank Aaron broke it in 1974.
